Great Horkesley Cricket Club First Team v West Bergholt 2nds on Sat 04 Jun 2005 at 2.00pm
Great Horkesley Cricket Club Won By 108 Runs
Match report
Chosing to bat at The Chantry, the Hawks got off to an explosive start thanks to the batting of Jetty Sarat, who brought up his half-century within nine overs before he edged behind for a good catch from opposition skipper John Grimwade for 56. Nihal Jayasuriya was, in contrast, much more circumspect in his initial batting, playing some wonderful cuts and pulls to the delight of his team mates. Conybeare and Srikanth added useful runs in the middle order before the Chantrymen finished on a pleasing 214 - using up their full allocation of overs.
In reply, Fitzgerald picked up the crucial wicket of the classy Pierre Bell with a ball that followed the batsmen and induced him to an edge behind. Hart gave good support too but bowling into the wind he conceded three boundaries of one over and was replaced by Conybeare. It paid immediate dividends as the Zimbabwean picked up a wicket in his first over, and when captain Laitt introduced himself to the attack he couldn't have hoped for better than taking the wicket of A Clark with his first delivery - pegging back the openers middle stump.
Confusion over the number of overs bowled by the Bergholt scorers led to Fitzgerald coming back into the attack at the expense of Laitt - and again, the captain's decision was fully jusitified as he bowled Bergholt's former first team skipper Pete Lodge. With three young colts in the side it was then always going to be a matter of how quickly the Hawks could get the remaining wickets. Conybeare took great delight in taking the wicket of Applin with a well judged slower ball and Twydell with a swinging 'yorker'.
With the heart ripped out of the side it enabled the skipper to use some of his less mainstream bowlers with Ranjit Kandiah and Sridhar Konda getting a chance to turn their arm over. Both took a couple of overs to get going, but eventually, the visitors in this Derby clash were bowled out over a hundred short of their target.
