Great Horkesley Cricket Club First Team v Chappel & Wakes Colne 2nds on Sun 05 Jun 2005 at 2.00pm
Great Horkesley Cricket Club Won By 9 Runs
Match report
Great Horkesley made it two wins out of two on Sunday afternoon with an excellent victory over Chappel & Wakes Colne at The Chantry. At 120 for 9, victory looked unlikely until a record 78 run 10th wicket stand between McLean and Hart gave the Hawks a total they could just about defend.
Put into bat on the same wicket as they had played on Saturday, the Hawsks once again got off to an explosive start with Jayasuriya and Sarat ensuring that the bat dominated the ball. The Sri Lankan eventually went for 20 after a ball popped at him, with Hope taking a good catch behind considering the distance he had to make up to get there. Up stepped Rishi Sharath to the wicket on his first occasion at the top of the batting order in a League game. The U13 made a good fist of it too. Solid in defense, he was also calm and assured when playing his shots, including a big six over mid-wicket. He may not have scored many runs, but he held an end up well as wickets tumbled all around him.
Rob Carter was the problem, taking five for 28 in his ten over spell, though Fitzgerald was possibly an unlucky victim of an optimistic LBW shout. Srikanth, Laitt, Konda and Pembroke all failed to trouble the scorers as Carter reaped havoc before an extra-ordinary last wicket stand put the Hawks right back into the game.
At 120 for nine, and with over fifteen overs to go, things looked desperate for the home side. "Cometh the man, cometh the hour" is Sid McLean's favourite welcome to the crease message for any new batsmen with a tricky job to do - and Sid took those words to hart. The Carribbean farmed the striker intelligently, latching onto any bad balls and thumping them to the boundary. Hart took his share of glory too - stroking three majestic boundaries in one over off opposition skipper Feviour. Importantly, the last wicket stand ensured that we used up all our overs, as Sid reach a wonderful halfcentury to make him Horkesley's man of the match.
Chappel are a good side though and have some decent batsmen in their ranks, and with a weakened bowling attack, the Hawks would still struggle even with nearly two hundred to defend. In the end though, every single man and boy did their job to the best of their abilities to secure victory.
Fitzgerald and Hart started the bowling off but it took nearly ten overs for the breakthrough to come as McCue edged one behind to the safe hands of McLean. Sarat replaced Hart at the Road End of the ground and bowled one his best spells for a while, taking three wickets for just 19 runs in his ten overs, bowling Burgess and Flood and trapping Pye Leg Before.
With five overs to come from elsewhere, Laitt used the drinks interval to introduce Jayasuriya to the attack and he picked up a handy wicket. Importantly, the Hawks skipper was also thinking ahead to the end of the game, and knew that he wanted himself to be bowling that last, and crucial over should it come down to it.
Chappel's batsmen scored consistently with only Flood of the top eight failing to get to double figures, and putting together decent little partnerships. However, the run rate was always just getting higher and higher as the denouement of the encouter got closer and closer. Chappel skipper Fevious was bowled by the offspin of Laitt for 15 which brought bowling hero Carter to the crease - a big man who could hit the ball a long way. However, against Sarat and Laitt they were always held tight and the pressure intensified.
That pressure got to Hope who, after playing a ball back to bowler Hart in the 40th over of the match, started to go for a run which was never there. Hart simply threw the ball down to the other end and run out the Chappel wicketkeeper. Hart also picked up a wicket in his last over too - Laitt taking a catch a mid-wicket with all the other fielders posted out to the boundary as fours and sixes were required by the opposition.
It still left Chappel needing a thirteen from the last over to win the games. Attwood and Carter picked up a single off the first ball before Laitt pitched one up full which Carter missed. The third ball again missed Carter's bat but thumped into the pads of the big man and the umpire agreed with bowler and wicket keeper that the ball would have gone on to hit the stumps. Laitt's tight bowling ensured that there would be no last ball heroics from Swain or Attwood as the players left field just ten minutes before nine o'clock.
This was an entertaining game to both play in and watch for one simple reason. It was a competitive fixture between two well-matched Division Four sides who wanted to play the game in the right way. Too many games in the bottom leagues see teams massaging already highly inflated ego's, after high centuries and cheap wickets against players off a standard well below them. Teams are now finding themselves struggling to find players (and more importantly youngsters) who want to take part in that sort of game - and who can blame them. Give them competitive cricket like this game here and captains will find it much easier to find eleven people on a Sunday.
