Great Horkesley Cricket Club First Team v St Osyth 2nds on Sat 11 Jun 2005 at 2.00pm
Great Horkesley Cricket Club Won By 8 wickets
Match report
Great Horkesley recorded their third successive victory overcoming St Osyth 2nds by 8 wickets, a welcome turnaround in fortunes following three losses on the spin and a good start to the Hawks second double header weekend. The Hawks indomitable captain lost the toss, sent into the field, our fearless leader got off to an authoritative start by despatching his men to all parts in what appeared to be a prepared speech, which may have been caused by the shock of finding that he’d been promoted to opening the bowling due to an injury to the versatile paceman Niall Fitzgerald who took on the wicket keeping gloves.
The visitors started slowly held down by some good tight bowling from Laitt and Hart, it wasn’t till the ninth over before the breakthrough finally came. There was some brief concern when Hart was despatched for a six and a four in consecutive deliveries - going for eleven in the over. While looking for the ball which had disappeared into the field across the road all available members of the team dealt out helpful advice like “pitch it just back of the length, he’s looking to drive everything”. It appears that Paul heeded this advice as a catch was duly spooned to mid on first ball of the next over where Rishi Sharath made sure. Wickets continued to fall regularly punctuated with the usual mis-fields and dropped catches (I don’t recall these? Ed.), without which you would wonder if you’d turned up at the right game. In the absence of any real partnerships developing the scoring rate never got out of control with the visitors being bowled out for 116 in under forty overs.
The Hawks got their run chase off to a cracking start with Sarat taking 22 off the first over, however things slowed down a little as the St Osyth bowlers settled into their line and length. Peter Hewitt was the first wicket to fall bowled for 4, and this brought Steve Riddleston to the crease - a welcome return for a man making his comeback after a self imposed leave of absence, and set about getting the runs in his usual controlled manner. Sarat (45) was the next man to go leaning back on a cut and picking out the man between point and cover. Next man in was Allan Conybeare. The Zimbabwean who disappointingly still has not had his call from the ZCU inviting him to strengthen the national squad, knuckled down with Riddleston (25*) and went after the remaining seventy odd runs picking up the ones and twos and putting away the bad balls, with the winning runs coming off an exquisite cut from Conybeare (34*) through the covers for four in the 27th over.
The St Osyth side featured a number of colts, a couple of whom bowled pretty well, but overall cricket was the winner on the day!
