Lexden CC v Great Horkesley Cricket Club First Team on Sun 12 Jun 2005 at 2.00pm
Great Horkesley Cricket Club Lost By 3 Wickets
Match report
On Sunday afternoon, the Hawks travelled the small distance to Spring Lane to take on Lexden. Relegated last season, they are doing well so far this campaign with just a couple of defeats and, with a weakened side out, The Chantrymen would do well to compete – they did far better than that, and almost pulled off a shock win.
For once, the Hawks skipper called correctly at the toss and asked his side to bat. It was a decision that looked to have paid dividends with Sarat and Jayasuriya, yet again getting the visitors off to a great start against a good bowling attack in John Jones and Ali Manhire.
Indeed, the visitors took their first point of the afternoon before the first wicket had fallen, but shortly afterwards, Sarat launched into a full bloodied drive down to long-off where Jones held a good catch. Peter Hewitt was out shortly afterwards before, with the scores on a hundred, came a run-out which most of those who watched it will talk about for some time!
Srikanth, who batted beautifully for his 33, drove the ball down to the long on boundary where Chris Wilson just got to the ball inside the rope. Unfortunately, Jayasuriya and his batting colleague decided to discuss the shot in the mistaken understanding that the ball had gone for four. As no one from either side had called that the ball had gone, the umpires had no choice but to give the Sri Lankan doctor out.
Poor Scott Warren lasted just three balls before getting out to his evening league team-mate Colin Hayward but Niall Fitzgerald took the game to his opponents with some big hitting to score 40 – sending one of Allan Highfield's deliveries almost on to the Avenue of Remembrance!
As the innings started towards its conclusion, Horkesley started to lose wickets at regular intervals, though it has to said that there was superb return catches taken by the bowlers. Hawks skipper Laitt continued his bad run of form with his third consecutive duck, but Underwood, Arcot and McLean all held up the inevitable finished. The Hawks innings ended three overs from their allocation – and as we saw the previous Sunday that could be crucial.
The Chantrymen’s skipper Laitt made immediate inroads on the Lexden batting line-up by dismissing veteran opener Allan Highfield for a duck in the first over well held at slip by Arcot. Solid, if somewhat unconventional batting from Chris Wilson, and John Jones saw off the opener Horkesley attack – though Laitt would be pleased with weekend figures of 20-7-43-4 after having missed the early part of the season through illness.
The breakthrough came through the loopy leg spin of Arcot who tempted Jones down the track to a ball which he missed, but didn’t miss the stumps. Unfortunately, on a pitch that offered little to the spinner, Arcot proved slightly expensive and was replaced by Warren who in tandem with Fitzgerald, taking a risk by bowling with a bad back, brought the Hawks right back into the encounter which looked to be getting away from them.
Four wickets fell in just four overs. Fitzgerald bowled Sellar, before Wilson went for 59 thanks to a good swooping catch from Sarat off the bowling of Warren. Next ball, opposition captain Anthony Shearman was bowled by clever bowling from the same bowler. Fitzgerald again hit the stumps in his next over as Lexden collapsed from 122-2 to 138-6 in a matter of balls.
However, Ali Manhire still remained at the crease, and he was there to see his side home with some good patient defensive batting. Fitzgerald did get out Jerry Morgan as well, but a whirlwind 17 from Hayward saw the home side home by 3 wickets.
Another good encounter between two good Division 4 sides, which the Hawks could consider themselves unfortunate to have lost as key moments went against them on this occasion. However, Horkesley captained had said that before the game, with the side he had, he would have taken nearly two hundred runs and seven wickets. Another good fielding performance has also highlighted the fact the Hawks are a decent side and should be good enough to have few relegation worries come the end of the season.
