Chappel & Wakes Colne 2nds v Great Horkesley Cricket Club First Team on Sun 03 Jul 2005 at 2.00pm
Great Horkesley Cricket Club Won 161 Runs

Match report Great Horkesley completed their most comprehensive victory of the season at The Hobbies on Sunday with a 161 run destruction of Chappel & Wakes Colne 2nds. A century from Jetty Sarat and 61* from James Wallis set the platform for victory which tight bowling and good fielding eventually secured.
Chappel skipper Martin Feavious will probably be regretting his decision to let the men from the Chantry bat first after visiting skipper Laitt called incorrectly. With Jayasuriya arriving late it was David Walker who opened with Sarat, but sadly the vice-captain was run out in the 7th over after a mix-up with his partner. Jayasuriya departed soon after, a ball cutting back to hit his leg stump, and at 46 for 2, things looked a little perilous.
That's when Sarat hit his straps lifting Darren Pye over square leg for two 6's in the same over and being absolutely brutal on anything short. He received good support from Srikanth before he perhaps unluckily adjudged LBW to bring Wallis to the crease. This was without doubt his best innings for GHCC. He was content to play second fiddle to the Indian batting supremo and in turn they saw off the dangerous Rob Carter's ten over spell.
Sarat's fun finally came to end when he scored 133 in the 30th over of the game, bowled by T Flatt. It was a magnificent effort and one which we should see more off. He has the talent to take any bowling attack apart in this Division but he needs to concentrate for longer periods of the game.
Wallis was then freed of his responsibility, at one point scoring sixteen of one over, and between him and Fitzgerland, it look as though three hundred was on. Fitzgerald was caught behind for 33, but Wallis went on to make his highest Great Horkesley score of 61 not out. Simon Underwood and Ranjit Kandiah also batted towards the end, but sadly, the impressive mark of three centuries was beyond the club.
At the small ground like The Hobbies it was essential that the Hawks fiedled well with two men posted on the short square boundaries from the beginning. Although we were confident, we also recalled nearly chasing down three hundred at Great Braxted & tiptree ourselves and knew it could be done.
Fitzgerald and opening bowler partner Hart calmed all those fears though with a good opening burst that saw the first three Chappel batsmen back in the hutch for less than 27. Hart was miserly while Fitzgerald was always a danger however, the threat of rain saw both bowlers taken off for people with shorter run-ups in the hope we could get the game over with.
There then followed a terrific competition betwenn Horkesley skipper Laitt and veteran Chappel batsmen Bill Maythem which both players enjoyed thoroughly. Laitt would go past the outside edge for a couple of deliveries, before Maythem would score a couple. It waS great entertainment for the watching crowd. Wickets were however, falling regularly. McCue was caught by Sarat of Laitt, whilst Jayasuriya was alert at point to catch Saunders.
Ranjit Kandiah also picked up three wickets thanks to some excellent catching in the outfield from Paul Hart at the second attempt, and then from Laitt in slips - the skipper changing direction after wicketkeeper Wallis had deflected the ball away from him. Eventually, the key wicket of Maytham came and it was only fitting that Laitt was the man to take it - Srikanth catching him at deep mid on. Such was the mutual respect between the two players that they shook hands on the wicket before Maytham made the walk back to the pavillion.
It was left to Jayasuriya to take the final wicket with Fitzgerald running in from cover to secure a comprehensive win over a side that a on a level par with the Hawks and like to play the game the same way. It is always a pleasure to play them, and look forward to doing so next year as well.
