Great Horkesley Cricket Club First Team v West Mersea 2nds on Sat 09 Jul 2005 at 2.00
Great Horkesley Cricket Club Won By 3 Wickets

Match report Great Horkesley made it two wins out of two with a last over win against West Mersea 2nds at The Chantry. CS Srikanth's 73 paved the way for the victory against the Islanders with Jetty Sarat again providing good support at the top of the order with another half-century. In the end though it was left to Paul Hart to score the winnings runs with just three deliveries left as the Hawks won by 3 wickets.
Skipper Graeson Laitt lost the toss to his opposing number Pryke but was pleased to be asked to field anyway on a wicket which looked as though it may well get better as the day progressed. The Hawks made immediate inroads in the first over as Laitt, opening the bowling in the absence of Niall Fitzgerald, had Phillips caught at square leg by Daren Asher. Goodridge and Taylor then attacked with the later eventually being dismissed by Paul Hart (Wallis take the catch behind the stumps) for 40 with the score on forty-nine. Another big hitter, Luke Conway started a procession of lost balls as he racked up 54 with three 6's before he was bowled by Kandiah. The Sri Lankan also took the next wicket, that of the dangerous Srinivisan for 22, Asher again showing a safe pair of hands when others were perhaps not quite so safe during the afternoon. As The Chantrymen closed out the innnigs, Ranjit Kandiah took two identical catches at mid-wicket of the bowling of Sarat as the Islanders finished on 196 for 7. Hawks skipper was pleased with the display from his bowlers to keep the score down but knew that it was a challenging target for the Horkesley batsmen. Special mention must go to Chamot Jayasuriya who made his debut for the club and did exceptionally well in the field.
As always though, the Hawks exploded into life when batting with Jetty Sarat again leading the way. Twenty-seven runs came off the first two overs from Phillips (who had been dismissed for a duck earlier in the game) as Horkesley reached fifty without loss in just the 8th over of the game. Even Jayasuriya got into the fun of the things with a swept six into the top of the hedge at the road end of the ground.
There's a saying in cricket that if you get one out, a second tends to follow quickly afterwards. Horkesley complied to that belief in full with the first two wickets going down in successive deliveries with the score on ninety. Sarat tamely found the hands of Srinivisan at backward point off Conway's last ball of the over, before Sanderson's first delivery of the game was smacked to cover by Jayasuriya and well held by Woodley.
The Horkesley batting line-up was not the strongest seen this season, missing Chapman, Conybeare, Fitzgerald and David Walker among others, so it would still be a tough task. It was a job that Srikanth relished in, with some great shot making including two big sixes towards the pavillion off the unfortunate Phillips. Srikanth as ably supported by Daren Asher as the pair added 64 runs before the Indian was caught out by Conway for 73.
That dismissal preceeded a mini-collapse and panic amongst The Chantrymen as a flurry of wickets saw the remaining batsmen run around looking for pads, bats and helmets. With just five runs required for victory, Horkesley lost three wickets! The left-arm spin of Goodridge saw Conway catch an Asher skier, while Kandiah was snaffled by wicket-keeper Hughes of Srinivisan. With the captain Laitt struggling to get the ball off the square, Hart took control and clubbed a winning boundary with just three balls remaining.
Again, this was good game between two good Division Four sides with players of the same ability competing against each other. I doubt whether next week's encounter with Coggeshall will be quite so interesting!
