Great Horkesley Cricket Club First Team v Cressing on Sun 30 Apr 2006 at 1pm
Great Horkesley Cricket Club Won By 7 Wickets
Match report
Great Horkesley got the 2006 season off to a cracking start with a comfortable seven wicket win over Cressing. Allan Conybeare's four wickets, and 68 not out from Ed Long-Price were the main reasons for the success.
On a sunny if slightly cold Sunday afternoon, Hawk's skipper Graeson Laitt lost the toss but was happy enough when his opposition number invited his side to have first chance to use the ball as the pitch didn't look as though it would do much throughout the fixture. Niall Fitzgerald struggled to find his rhythm in the early overs but did take the first wicket of the campaign when trapping Hayden in front of the stumps. Conybeare held on at slip after a thick edge from Dellar to give Hart his first wicket of the campaign.
However, Skinner then took the game to The Chantrymen with an awesome display of driving with one over from Hart costing 24 runs - not surprisingly the last of his spell. Skipper Laitt's decision to throw the ball to the returning Conybeare - back after injury ruined his season last year - paid dividends as he picked up a wicket in his first over from the Road End with Arcot taking the catch.
Skinner had by now raced on to 63 before he was undone by The Hawks skipper with a turning delivery that took the edge of the bat and was safely snapped up by wicket-keeper McLean. There followed a procession of wickets for the Zimbabwean who ended up with a four-for and will probably be disappointed not to have taken five.
Leg spin was introduced in to the attack through Arcot and he took the wicket of Elliston with his first delivery of the season - beating Conybeare who was succesful with his second ball. Arcot had another success four balls later - again hitting the stumps - before Ben Pearce finished off the tail to leave Cressing all out for 150.
The Hawks reply started in fantastic fashion - though not for the driver of the car going past the ground. Sarat smashed the first ball of the innings out of the ground where it hit a passing car. In the fifteen years I've been playing for the club I've seen many close misses, but never an actual hit!
Sarat's innings didn't last that long before he was caught out for 18 but Jayasuriya and Rishi Sharath held firm in the face of some fast bowling from Skinner. Jayasuriya was particularly harsh on anything short and wide but the partnership ended when Prince was run out after fine work by Skinner in the field.
That brough Ed Long-Price to the crease and Horkesley never really looked back. He placyed in his usual technically correct style, cutting and sweeping to maximum effect on the way to a peerless 68 not out with perhaps only one chance offered through out the innings.
Jayasuriya was bowled after playing the shot he had tried three times earlier in the season allowing Allan Conybeare his first bat since June of last season. The African soon re-discovered his form with some beautiful off drives allowing the Hawks to wrap up victory after 34 overs had been completed.
