Great Horkesley Cricket Club Lost 1 Run
Match report
Great Horkesley Cricket Club managed to grab defeat from the jaws of victory as they were knocked out of the nPower Village Cup in the 2nd Round at Tillingham by one run. The Hawks had look on for an upset against their Mid Essex Division One opponents, but crashed from 156 for 4, to 183 for 9. Needing three off the final ball, number eleven batsmen Anthony Pembroke could only hit a single but in truth the game was lost far earlier than that final over.
On a pitch that had suffered a lot of rain the previous day, Captain Graeson Laitt was happy to win the toss and insert their opponents. Tillingham got away to a flier not helped by the fact that strike bowler Niall Fitzgerald was unable to gain a firm foothold at the crease leaving the home side on 40 after just 6 overs. Laitt made a bowling change to bring himself on and together with Paul Hart managed to lower the run rate significantly with Hart taking the first wicket to fall. Zimbabwean Allan Conybeare's left arm medium pacers accounted for three wicket as Tillingham amassed 184 off their allocation of 40 overs.
In reply, Horkesley started in the best possible manner with Sarat quick to get among the bowlers, but then perished when hitting a full toss straight at the cover fielder. The outgoing batsmen was replaced by his son Rishi who together with Nihul Jayasuriya calmly gave The Chantrymen a good start with the Sri Lankan Doctor particularly unforgiving on anything short and wide.
When Allan Conybeare and Ed Long-Price both hit the 40 run mark, and with Horkesley purring along at 156 for 4 with nine overs left the Hawks looked as though they had all but booked their place in the Third Round but both players departed shortly after each other after a partnership of 80 in eleven overs. However, in the fading light and mist of the Dengie Peninsular no other Horkesley batsmen was able to continue the good work which left Horkesley still needing 12 of the last five overs. Sadly, that target became three off three balls and despite the best efforts of the lower order, it was not to be.
Skipper Graeson Laitt said "I'm desperately disappointed to have lost this game from the great position that we had got ourselves in to. We must learn how to close games out and take the singles available to us rather than attempt to go for the big shots". It was the club's first ever foray into the competition and despite the defeat Laitt felt that it had been a useful exercise. "The fact that we could and should have won this game makes me believe that we can progress further in years to come."
