Great Horkesley Cricket Club First Team v Kirby on Sun 17 Apr 2011 at 1pm
Great Horkesley Cricket Club Won by 140 runs
Match report
Our inaugural game at Manor Rd will go down in the GHCC annals thanks to Graeson Laitt recording his first-ever hat-trick as well as his 500th wicket for the club. Spare a thought for the club chairman who will no doubt have to listen to each wicket described in detail on a daily basis...
On a beautiful afternoon the ground looked stunning and Horkesley got off to a reasonable start, losing Abdullah early on before a solid partnership between Nihal and Allan. Allan was hitting the ball particularly well and although Nihal departed for a steady 30, runs were flowing freely. Wallis and Conybeare then took advantage of some wayward bowling before Zimba was yorked by Kirby's standout bowler Lawes for an impressive 68. Rakesh added a few before he was stumped going for an expansive drive and Ramali soon followed. Once Wallis holed out hitting a very slow and high full toss down to mid-on, the innings subsided to some extent, but the Hawks were pleased to see out the full 45 overs and the score of 212 was very competitive with the big boundaries and the slow nature of the early-season pitch.
The early part of Kirby's innings was marked by some abject fielding as the Hawks showed just how rusty they were with a series of dropped catches before Shafi took the first wicket. However Kirby were scoring at a reasonable rate and taking advantage of the fielding lapses before the momentum changed with the introduction of Rakesh Rakesh who proceeded to bowl an superb spell of nine overs of accurate left arm bowling for only eight runs. The one wicket (a magnificent catch at slip by Fitzgerald) was less than he deserved.
The stage was then set for Laitt to return remarkable figures of 4 for 7, with all four of the wickets falling in 5 balls including a famous hat-trick celebrated by Laitt in fine style.
Ramali, Hart and Cheema also took wickets as Kirby collapsed with only Wilson putting up any resistance. All in all this was a good run-out for the team and a comprehensive win in a match played in excellent spirit.
