Great Horkesley Cricket Club First Team v West Bergholt on Sun 15 May 2011 at 1pm
Great Horkesley Cricket Club Won by 2 wickets

Match report The Hawks played host to their hosts, with the "visit" of West Bergholt to their home ground. In what is becoming a surprising but welcome habit, the Gt Horkesley bowling was immediately accurate and Rakesh bowled his usual excellent line in restricting the Bergholt openers to a modest scoring rate. In the end the pressure told and Conybeare picked up the first wicket of Buckley. Clarke then followed for a fluent 19 before being caught behind off Fitzgerald, and in strode Southernwood who immediately struck four consecutive imperious cover drives to take the gloss off the earlier success in the over. He followed this next over with a huge six to make it 22 from six balls and things were looking ominous, but Niall had his revenge with a well directed delivery, just before the momentum had swung too far in Bergholt's direction. Wickets then fell in regular intervals with Laitt, bowling with good control, picking up three and once the obdurate Trevor Rogers was dismissed Rakesh then cleaned up the tail to leave Bergholt all out for 159 in the last over.

After another great tea the Hawks got off to a steady start before Abdullah went for an attacking 18 but Conybeare after a few fine shots was involved in a needless run-out when he called for a single and a good throw beat him to strike a blow to Horkesley hopes. The situation worsened when Ed Sheen was also dismissed cheaply but Jayasuriya was batting well in what has been a very solid start to the season for the Sri Lankan.

Wallis came in and hit a few decent shots and at the drinks break The Hawks were looking in reasonable shape. However each time they got into a strong position they conceded a wicket with Jayasuiya getting out to a short wide ball from Rogers then Wallis adjudged LBW for the second consecutive innings by a grumpy Conybeare still seething from the run-out mix-up and from being made to umpire for 25 straight overs.

Rakesh added a few before being well caught in the covers and then things began to get very tight and it appeared that Horkesley were going to do their usual trick of collapsing when chasing a modest total. Fitzgerald was the Hawks main hope and when he pulled the ball to deep midwicket hearts were in mouths but the unfortunate fielder could only push the ball over the ropes for six and suddenly there were less than ten needed. Underwood helped with a determined four before being LBW and it was left to Laitt who strode confidently to the crease and despite some appalling running made short work of knocking off the winning runs, the highlight of his innings being him stopping play in order to theatrically open a brown envelope which presumably was used to offer a bung to the opposition.

With their batting line up, Horkesley should have made a much better job of chasing the runs but Bergoholt defended their total well and a close fought match could have gone either way.
