Braintree College v Great Horkesley Cricket Club First Team on Sun 22 May 2011 at 1pm
Great Horkesley Cricket Club Won by 9 runs
Match report
On a windy but sunny afternoon at Braintree CC the Hawks lost the toss and were asked to have first dig on a track that looked a belter, the outfield was as usual very short so batsmen were going to get value for shots. The openers got off to a fortuitous start with both Nihal (19) and Abdullah (21) being dropped a couple of times in the opening overs, Abdullah also narrowly escaped a clear run out chance, unfortunately he was unable to take full advantage of his good fortune and was the first to go caught off the bowling of Adam Archer for 21 at mid off, Zim strode to the crease after a circumspect start opened his account when the first change bowler Al Archer came on with a 6 and took 18 off the over. Nihal was the second to go punching a checked drive straight to mid off, the highlight of his innings being a trade mark pull in front of square off the bowling of Dan Garner. Rakesh got off to a good start but was dismissed for 5. Niall (0) continued his unlucky start to the season by somehow scooping Dan Garner to short cover dismissed without troubling the scorers. Ramali and Zim began a rebuilding job taking us up to the drinks break where as so often happens a wicket fell in the first over after the break, Zim (34) pushed at a wide one and only managed to lob a simple catch up to Adam Archer who was lurking in the covers. Ramali followed soon after bowled by a cracker from Joe Garner, it was now up to Sean and Graeson to rescue the situation which they duly did taking advantage of the second string bowlers both played beautifully with barely a chance offered. Graeson clobbered (hoiked) a couple of fours through mid wicket and when they moved third man to reinforce the midwicket boundary he managed to guide one (nicked) down through the now vacant third man area, fine cricket indeed. The Hawks finished their innings on 233 for nine which whilst an excellent effort considering the perilous position we had been in at one point, thanks largely to Sean (39) and Graeson (49*), was just enough to give us a chance if we bowled well.
The second innings got off to good start with one of the BCCC danger men Dan Garner (9) hitting Rakesh for a couple of boundaries in the first over, Paul started the second over of the innings with what can only be described as a rank long hop which Garner should have despatched over the clubhouse into the nearby housing estate, but he succeeded only in hitting it straight into the safe hands of Sean; one down. Paul then managed to have Adam Archer (10) caught at deep square leg off another long hop two overs later Zim made a hash of judging the catch and ended up taking it millimetres off the ground; two down. The young and very talented Vickery (29) was playing nicely but got a little caught up with playing the dab down to third man and when that was sealed off he began to walk across his stumps looking to work the ball into the leg side, this resulted in him being bowled middle stump attempting a whip across the line. The three main men had now gone and the Hawks felt that the game was in the bag, always a mistake! Brooks (53) clattered some wayward bowling with some very hard hitting and was ably supported by Haythorpe (69*) before being bowled by Rakesh in his comeback over. Niall who was keeping wicket to this point was asked to bowl, he was replaced by Anthony who put his body on the line using his abdomen to stop a couple of quick ones from Niall, this novel approach to keeping doesn’t do much for one’s health. Since Zim’s bowling was getting the treatment the think tank decided to entrust the job to him, another cunning move as Anthony then took a good catch at extra cover. From the dismissal of Brooks good tight bowling from Rakesh, Ramali, Niall and Paul turned the screw. The hosts required over 10 per over from the last 10, a tough ask with the field spread protecting the boundaries, Haythorpe and Breed gamely went after it with some good running between the wickets but were unable to get the boundaries that they needed.
