Match report
I am not really sure where and how to start this match report on what was a record breaking day at The Glebe, West Mersea.
Following yesterday's win at Kirby, the Hawks side was slightly depleted and this led to a call to our friends at Slough CC to see if they could offer any reinforcements. To say that they succeeded is an understatement.
Up against Division One opponents in this Second Round PiriPiri Knockout Cup fixture, the Hawks skipper for the day Graeson Laitt, knew the importance of the toss - so promptly lost it. Have the club won a coin toss this season? Invited to field first, Paul Hart opened the bowling in partnership with Laitt (the first time he's done so in probably 5 years) and it was the latter with the first breakthrough as Mills played on - clearly expecting something much quicker! The opening bowlers were a bit unlucky with both having half-chances not taken.
Cue the changes - and cue the ball departing to all parts of West Merea (though in fairness both Laitt and Hart come in for some rough treatement from Rutter and Tilsley), the former on his way to the first century of the afternoon. Sharath grabbed a couple of wickets and Arcot also pitched in with a couple.
That brought the dangerous Luke Conway to the crease. 'Bowl to this tactic please lads' said the skipper. With the bowlers conveniently ignoring such wise words, Conway blasted his way to a superb (and at times violent) 119 - the highlight of which was a straight drive that literally whistled past Paul Hart's head....ruing having taken a wicket with the first ball of that one and only over in the spell!
Eventually, tea was taken with the home side on 388-9. A very high total that looked pretty much unachievable. If we could lose by less than 200 hundreds, the skipper would have been a happy and contented man knowing that his side had done their best, but they weren't quite good enough.
That wasn't to be the case though, as The Hawks ran Mersea oh so close. Khan and Sarat took the attack to the bowling with 60 runs of the first 6 overs alone.
There then came an extraordinary rain delay - with no more than light drizzle falling, the umpires took the players from the field with the majority shaking their heads in disbelief. This sort of thing doesn't happen in Division Three normally I can tell you!
After a forty minute delay, the sides managed to get back out there and it was 'game on' when Mills had Sarat caught by Tilsley for 35. That bought Prince to the field and for the next 30 overs they were imperious. I will, at some point, work out the number of balls faced between them but they rattled along at over 8 an over for the best part of it.
Khan broke the club record score - previously held by Mark Sproats at 164 - with the club's first ever double century, while Prince also went on to make a stunning 109*.
Sadly, Khan was dismissed in the 41st over, bowled by Rumble, and the innings not surprisingly lost its momentum. It's difficult for any new batsman to come in, in that situation, and start scoring at the ten an over which was by now required for victory.
And so the end of the incredible afternoon's cricket. The aggregate score over 762 runs were scored at an average run rate of 8.47 an over, and to the League's knowledge, is a record in itself. Indeed, we think it would be in among the highest EVER aggregate scores in village cricket nationally!
Khan & Sharath's thirty over partnership of 258 is the highest for any wicket - beating the previous of 249 that Prince (147*) had put on with Allan Conybeare (122) against Real Oddies in 2008. While 374-5 is, and probably will be for some time unless we invite them back again, the club's highest ever score.
Congratulations to West Mersea - we wish them well in the next round tie against Cavaliers.
