Match report Great Horkesley skipper Allan Conybeare led his side to the weekend's major cup upset at The Chantry this afternoon. Playing in the Extra-Preliminary Round of the PDQ Cup against Division 1 side Chappel & Wakes Colne, the Chantrymen bowled the visitors out for 158, twenty runs shy of their target. The Hawks had Niall Fitzgerald to thank for resurrecting the innings after they had slipped to 22-5, but with cameos from Stuart Taylor (11), youngster Chamot Jayasuriya (18) and Sayed Shafi (31) the Hawks were able to post a respectable 178.
In reply, Chappel's innings got off to a disastrous start as Shafi took a wicket with his first ball of the season. The home side continued to take wickets at regular intervals was Shafi finishing with three, while Fitzgerald and skipper Conybeare ended with two apiece. Doc Ramali took a stunning diving catch to get rid of the dangerous Govender (49) and it was left to Peter Hewitt, making his 100th appearance for the club, to stump S Young to record an historic win.
The Hawks will entertain either West Mersea or Lexden in the next round on June 3rd at The Chantry.
