Great Horkesley Cricket Club First Team v West Bergholt 2nds on Sat 02 Jun 2007 at 2.00pm
Great Horkesley Cricket Club Won by 78 runs
Match report
Great Horkesley enjoyed a good return to the league cricket on Saturday afternoon, as they saw off the challenge of West Bergholt 2nds at The Chantry. It means that the Hawks continue their 100% league record and can go into Sunday's Cup game with West Mersea in great heart.
On a warm June afternoon, Al Conybeare called correctly and opted to bat first on a typical Horkesley wicket. The Hawks were boosted by the return of the Sarat's to the side - and it didn't take long for Jetty to find the middle of the bat as he and Nihul Jayasuriya put together a 98 run opening partnership before the Sri Lankan Doctor pulled the ball straight in to square legs grateful hands.
Skipper Conybeare continued where the Doctor left off as the Hawks reached 148 for the loss of one wicket before Sarat called for a quick single and found himself well out of his ground. There then followed a mini-collapse as The Hawks found partnerships hard to put together. Niall Fitzgerald hit a quick 26 while Chamot Jayasuriya showed what a promising batsman he is as he shepherded the tail - finally losing his wicket in the last over for a very useful 17.
Jayasuriya Jnr then continued to show his promise with the ball as he opened the bowling in conjunction with Niall Fitzgeral. Moving the ball with swing, Chamot bowled three succesive maidens to start with and when he'd finished his spell, he had figures of 5-3-6-0. However, it was Fitzgerald who made the breakthrough with a fast yorker that beat Luxton's bat and followed that up with a similar type of ball to dismiss Bergholt skipper Chris Southernwood to leave him with 10-1-42-2.
Skipper Conybeare then turned to Graeson Laitt and it was the former captain who took the vital wicket of McKillop - top edging an attempted flick to leg - though the catch was very well held by Sarat at square leg. Laitt continued to take wickets at regular intervals to destroy Bergholt's middle order though he spurned a chance to catch Shelley off his own bolwing. If Laitt wasn't taking wickets, then Rishi Sharath was with two in his first over - the first as a result of a marvellous diving catch by Allan Conybeare at mid-off. Prince also ended the innings of left hander Rogers just shy of a well-built 47.
When Laitt just flicked the leg stump of Brown by a coat of varnish, he had taken his first five-for of the season and was hopeful of getting a sixth to get career best figures. However, when Applin scurried down the wicket to try and hoist Sharath in to the deep but missed the ball, wicket-keeper Wallis removed the bails to ensure that Great Horkesley beat West Bergholt 2nds by 78 runs.
