Scorecard

High Easter v Great Horkesley Cricket Club First Team on Sun 10 Jun 2007 at 2.00pm
Great Horkesley Cricket Club Won by 35 runs

Match report Great Horkelsey maintained their unbeaten run in Division 4 of the PDQ - but they were made to work very hard for their 35 run win. A hard-hitting 97 from N Smith had given High Easter hopes of success but James Wallis' safe hands on the edge of the boundary swung the game back in the Hawks favour.
Horkesley started off well reaching 66 without losing a wicket with Peter Hewitt (33) and Nihul Jayasuiya (30) forming an effective opening partnership. However, Dawson clipped Hewitt's leg stump and not long afterwards Prince's delivery just swung away enough to beat Jayasuriya's bat.
After that, wickets fell regularly with Dawson ending the match with figures of 10-1-36-4, so much so that at 136-6 the Hawks looked desperately short of a match winning score. That they ended up with 210 was thanks to the lower middle order with Stuart Taylor scoring a composed 22*, Shafi 17 and youngster Chamoth Jayasuriya 23 which included four boundaries.
The Hawks opening bowlers did well at the start of the second innings with just 46 scored off the first 16 overs at High Easter's picturesque but small ground. They hadn't reckoned for the hardhitting to come as Jayasuriya saw his third ball depart for a maximum, and then conceding 20 off his next over. Inbetween, High Easter lost their first wicket after a mix-up in the running - oddly with the score on 66...the same as Horkesley when they lost their first wicket.
After those two expensive overs, skipper Conybeare turned to experience and gave former captain Graeson Laitt a bowl. Though he didn't take a wicket he did stem the flow of runs for the time and perhaps more importantly, N Smith damaged a hamstring in defending a ball and was forced to leave the field to receover.
With Smith wickets tumbled with Mohammed Ramali taking his first five-for for the club as only D Dawson of High Easter reached double figures. With seven wickets down though Smith returned to the crease with a runner and started hitting the ball to all parts.
The Hawks knew that if Smith stayed around for the 45 overs then it would be the home side who would be celebrating victory, but with the field set deep, Smith picked out James Wallis on the leg-side boundary who held his composure to take the catch - and with it, the victory. Ramali ended the game with 10-2-5-25 whilst Jayasuriya mopped up the tail with a couple of late wickets.
It had been a decent game of cricket played between two good sides and in the right spirit - competitive without ever turning nasty. We wish High Easter well for the rest of the season and look forward to the visit to The Chantry later on in the campaign.
