Great Horkesley Cricket Club First Team v Ardleigh 2nds on Sun 17 Jun 2007 at 2.00pm
Great Horkesley Cricket Club Won by 5 wickets

Match report Great Horkesley continued their unbeaten run in Division 4 this season with a 5 wicket win over Ardleigh 2nds. Set 108 to win on what can only be described as a 'lively' pitch, the Hawks reached their target in the 27th over of the second innings.
On a wicket that had was damp following heavy rain over the previous days the general consensus was that it would be easier to bat on later in the day when the pitch had had chance to dry out. Thankfully, Hawks skipper Allan Conybeare won the toss and inserted the visitors into bat.
Almost immediately it became clear that batting wasn't going to be easy as the ball dug into the wicket and bounced over the batsmen's head on numerous occasions. Fortunately, the bounce was generally fairly slow and most players were able to sway out of the way before any damage could be caused to themselves or their team.
Ardleigh's inning was underpinned by 65 from K Lamont who almost carried his bat - only to end up the tenth wicket down in the 44th over. Horkesley bowled well with Shafi and Ramali causing problems and were perhaps unlucky not to gain great rewards. Niall Fitzgerald took a wicket in his first over as Stuart Taylor, keeping wicket for the first time in a Horkesley shirt, took the second of four catches behind the stumps.
After another steady spell from Chamoth Jayasuriya, skipper Conybeare asked Graeson Laitt to bowl up the hill - the first time he had done so in many many years. It didn't seem to bother him as he picked up a wickets on a regular basis thanks to some great catching from Shafi, Conybeare and Veevers. They say that catches win matches and in all, the Hawks caught nine of their opposition out - Niall Fitzgerald bowling M O'Brien the exception.
The Chantrymen knew that getting a score of 107 would still be difficult but decided to go on the offensive as much as possible. It was a track that you knew would get you out sooner or later, so better to make hay and put runs on the board until that time.
There was some early concern when opener Marcus Veevers top edge the ball in to his face but after a couple of moments to gather himself was ready to face the next ball. He and Nihul Jayasuriya put on 26 in just six overs to get the home side off to a great start before Veevers was quickly followed back into the pavillion by Stuart Taylor and Allan Conybeare.
There then followed an important partnership of 39 between Jayasuriya and Tom Bunting which in the context of the game, was hugely significant. Jayasuriya had hit the first two balls of O'Brien's spell for four before being bowled with the third ball and after a couple of very sweet strikes - including a superb extra-cover drive for four - Tom Bunting was caught out by A Fretton. That left Ramali and Niall Fitzgerald to see the side home with the latter scoring the more runs - 27 in all - as the Hawks made show of their fourth consecutive win in the Division.
