Ardleigh 2nds v Great Horkesley Cricket Club First Team on Sat 07 Jul 2007 at 2.00pm
Great Horkesley Cricket Club Won by 82 Runs
Match report
Great Horkesley kept their unbeaten run going this weekend with an 82 run victory of Ardleigh 2nds. After a solid batting performance from the Chantrymen, Paul Hart and Graeson Laitt took four wickets apiece to ensure the fifth League victory of the season.
The Hawks hadn't played for the past two weekends when their last opponents were, incidentally, Ardleigh under the leadership of Kevin Sage. After rain in the early part of the week the game was close to being called off, but a kind Friday wind and dried the pitch sufficiently for the game to go ahead.
Horkesley weren't at their strongest with some regulars being otherwise already engaged in cricketing action elsewhere, but with Sarat & Son making the long trip down from Slough - and another one roped in to play a well - the visitors certainly had a side which look competitive.
Skipper Allan Conybeare chose correctly and the toss and decided that he'd like to set the score - knowing the sun at The Recreation Ground can have an important being on the game in the second innings. Sarat & Prince opened the innings quietly but assuredly and were one short of a half-century opening partnership when the latter was adjudged LBW to Graham Cole. Two runs later and a controversial decision saw Sarat sent back to the pavilion for a caught behind by Lamont off the bowling of Bob Barrell.
Most Horkesley players were able to get in make at least double figures but no-one was really able to push on and get a big score. That was helped by some good fielding from Ardleigh including two very good caught-and bowled efforts from Barrell and Weatherill. The Horkesley tag also wagged with 52 runs being scored for the loss of the last four wickets - and perhaps more importantly crucial overs were used up in the process. The innings eventually ended when Hart misjudged a delivery that cut back enough to take his off-stump leaving Ardleigh 157 to inflict Horkesley's first league defeat of the season.
Skipper Conybeare sent his side into the field with a stern warning that his bowlers would need to be at their best. They were. The early run out of Chandler was followed by four quick wicket's all to Paul Hart - including the dangerous Kurt Lamont who the Hawk's had struggled to dismiss at The Chantry three weeks earlier.
Hart's opening partner Niall Fitzgerald could consider himself extremely unfortunate to finish wicketless with a few tough slip chances that just didn't go to hand. Hart almost finished with five wickets but unfortunately Durham-lad Fitzgerald couldn't take a sharp catch at second slip. Hart finished with 4-16 which was a good day's work.
By now Ardleigh captain Sage and Gary Brooker were trying to repair the damage that had seen their side slip to 11-4 at one stage. Both were watchful as they saw off Hart only to then face trouble at the other end as former captain Graeson Laitt took over with three wickets in four balls. Two overs later and Sage became Laitt's fourth wicket - and his 15th of the season so far - as Fitzgerald atoned for his earlier mistake with a good catch at mid-off.
Ardleigh's last wicket pair of Weatherill (7) and Cole (16*) added twenty runs for the last wicket but it wasn't quite enough to gain them a batting point as Simon Underwood's left arm spin took the final wicket with the score on 74.
So Horkesley continued the season as joint leaders of Division 4 but with games against The Real Oddies, Little Clacton and Little Bardfield Village on the horizon they know that there is a lot of work to do to maintain that position.
