Match report Great Horkesley's unbeaten league run came to an end on Sunday afternoon when the Real Oddies inflicted their first defeat of the season by five wickets. The Hawks posted a total of 150ao but a fighting 69* from Tim Fitzgerald saw the Oddies home.
Hawks captain Allan Conybeare lost the toss and was invited to bat first by Pete Pearson on a wicket that was damp following an early morning storm in Colchester and would, no doubt, be easier to bat on as it dried out.
Conybeare and Nihul Jayasuriya both got starts before they both fell for 33 as Oddies catching reached its usual high standards. Tim Dickens was the pick of the home side's bowling with 5-27 including three wickets in an over including the prized wicket of the dangerous Niall Fitzgerald first ball. In the end, the Hawks managed to get up to 150 - a total they thought was competitive enough with the side they had out.
Unfortunately, they had reckoned without Fitzgerald who carried his bat throughout the innings for 69*. At the other end though there was a procession of wickets as Graeson Laitt continued his fine early form with another three wickets though it was also down to two fine catches from Paul Hart and Chamoth Jayasuriya. Sayed Shafi pinned Pearson LBW and at 87 for 4, The Oddies still had a long way to go. In the end though, Fitzgerald was given fine assistance by John Hepburn with a fifty run partnership that was eventually ended when Laitt snaffled him at point off the bowling of Conybeare.
The Hawks must now look to pick themselves up following their first defeat of the season as they now get ready to face Little Clacton at The Chantry on Sunday.
