Great Horkesley Cricket Club First Team v Little Bardfield Village on Sun 29 Jul 2007 at 2.00pm
Great Horkesley Cricket Club Lost by 12 runs
Match report
A dropped catch from Graeson Laitt cost Great Horkesley the chance to inflict the first defeat on Division 4 leaders Little Bardfield at The Chantry on Sunday afternoon. He failed to grab a simple caught-and-bowled chance from S Bass' second ball, and then watched as the LBV batsman smashed 54 runs and put on a 70 run parternship with skipper Will Slemmings (52). The Hawls failed to reach their target by just 12 runs despite an impressive display from Mike Conybeare (46) in his first game for the club.
After heavy overnight rain in Horkesley, the toss looked a good one to win with conditions likely to improve as the wicket dried out. Horkesley skipper Al Conybeare won the toss and invited LBV to bat first and Horkesley were soon in the wickets with J Owen and the hard-hitting Dean Bass victims of Sayed Shafi. Laitt then took the wicket of youngster E Hitchcock - and then came that vital drop. Sheridan did become another of Laitt's victims but from a potential 53 for 6, LBV marched on to 123 for 6 instead. Bass's innings contained six 6's but only two fours but he was given able support by Slemmings who made 52. Gamage and Fitzgerald both picked up a couple of wickets each towards the end of the innings where, by and large, the Hawks fielding had been impressive.
Chasing 166 to win, Slemmings took a smart caught-and-bowled chance to remove Rishi Sharath, before his Dad holed out with the score on 32. The two Conybeare's (Mike and Alan) then got the score upto 75. Mike Conybeare, the Zimbabwean captain's younger brother, helped himself to 46 before he was well caught by Slemmings on the deep square boundary. There then followed a couple of decent partnerships with Fitzgerald and Shafi scoring useful runs down the order, but after a 8th wicket partnership of 24 that had inched Horkesley to within a dozen of the target, Laitt hit a full toss to Owen and Hart succumbed to his second delivery.
This game was a joy to play in. Competitive, but played in a great spirit between two sides who were determined to enjoy the day - helped by the fantastic Indian tea! We wish LBV well for the rest of the season, and hope that we'll be playing them again in the not too distant future.
