St Osyth 2nds v Great Horkesley Cricket Club First Team on Sat 04 Aug 2007 at 2.00pm
Great Horkesley Cricket Club Lost by 5 wickets
Match report
Great Horkesley suffered their third league defeat of the season at Cowley Park on Saturday afternoon as they allowed St Osyth to score 250 in the second innings. The Hawks total of 249 for 4 was built on solid innings from Dominic Fitzgerald (84) and Allan Conybeare (80*) but a poor bowling performance from the Chantrymen gifted the 20 points to th home side.
With several players held up by various traffic problems around the country, Hawks skipper Allan Conybeare was a relieved man to be able to bat first. Chamath Jayasuriya started brightly enough but played too early at his seventh ball was caught by the bowler. A 91 run partnership then followed between Nihul Jayasuriya & Dominic Fitzgerald (in his first game of the season for the club) with the latter particularly catching the eye.
Nihul was once again fell when well set for 45 but skipper Conybeare was able to continue the good work as the Hawks reached 179 before Fitzgerald was caught out in the deep for 84. Wallis picked out the only man on the leg season to bring about a premature ending to his afternoon's batting but Niall Fitzgerald and the Zimbabwean skipper saw the Hawks to 249 with Conybeare grabbing four 6's during his innings.
Confidence was therefore high when the visitors took the field, fully expecting to be able to defend the victory target despite the quick outfield. However, the Toosey batsmen were quickly on to anything wide to pierce the infield with a succession of boundaries. Ramali did pick up an LBW decision in his first spell but collectively, the visitor's bowling line-up were going at six an over.
Control was desperately needed by then, and skipper Conybeare turned to the experienced Graeson Laitt in order to restore it. Taking the pace of the bowl, Laitt was unlucky not to grab any wickets and in the face of it, a ten over spell for 41 runs was an excellent return - and kept Horkesley in with a shout. He was ably supported by Niall Fitzgerald who after a couple of shaky overs, also restored some control with a spell of 10-3-30-2.
However, as the game reached its conclusion, the Hawks continued to leak runs at an alarming rate - not helped by a far too high a total of 38 extras - and Toosey reached their target with just over an over to go.
