Great Horkesley Cricket Club First Team v Real Oddies on Sun 23 Sep 2007 at 12:00 (noon)
Great Horkesley Cricket Club Won By 5 Wickets
Match report
Great Horkesley and The Real Oddies participated in another close game at The Chantry on Sunday afternoon. Set 156 to win, the Hawks reached their target with just 24 balls to spare thanks to Sayed Shafi's 51*.
With both clubs agreement, this game commenced at Noon to give the best opportunity of completing the ninety overs in reasonable light. Hawks captain Allan Conybeare won the toss and elected to bowl first and was rewarded with an excellent spell from Sayed Shafi of 10-5-26-2 - removing both The Oddies openers.
Paul Hart then removed the dangerous Adam Crane with a beautiful middle stump yorker as he helped himself to 7-3-17-2 before Graeson Laitt took two wickets in his first over to grab the wickets of Hepburn and Pearson.
With the score on 95-7 for Hawks will have been disappointed to allow the Oddies tail to wag and boost their score up to the 150 however, Clouter (21) O'Connell (10) and Parrick (23) batted sensibly enough to use up the remaining overs in the innings and to post a challenging target.
In reply, Jayausuriya Snr made a bright start with one terrific six of Clouter before he perished to a well-judge catch by Oddies captain Pearson at Mid-on. Conybeare, Taylor and Wallis kept the home side's total going at the required run rate as every single Oddies bowler picked up a solitary wicket.
When the 5th wicket fell at 100 there was still plenty of work to do for the Chantrymen. Sayed Shafi played well for his 51* (his first half century for the club) while Chamoth Jayasuriya showed just what a good batsmen he will be with a well-judged 15* which included the winnings run off Haque with an exquisite straight drive.
Another excellent match between Great Horkesley & The Real Oddies which just goes to show how much better this league is when the two teams are playing at the same level. Sadly, both sides looked to have missed out on a promotion place for this season - but that, at least, does bring the consolation of two more close games we hope next season.
