Great Horkesley Cricket Club Second Eleven v Lexden on Sun 02 Sep 2007 at 1.00pm
Great Horkesley Cricket Club Won by 14 runs
Match report
Great Horkesley picked up their first win for a month in an entertaining friendly against Lexden's 2XI. Matt Howlett's 109 looked to be guiding the visitors towards the victory target of 184 but some tight bowling, and the crucial wicket of Howlett helped The Hawks record a fourteen run win.
With the game being a friendly, the rules were relaxed to allow as many participants as possible with Lexden naming twelve and Horkesley orginally naming 14 players on the Friday before the game - only for that to dwindle down to ten by the time the first ball had been bowled.
Ramali and Jayasuriya got the Hawks off to a steady start with the left handed youngster the fourh man out with the score on 51 for a well-built 18. With plenty of overs left, that meant some repair work for the middle order which saw Graeson Laitt and Neil Morrison get their heads down and steadily rebuild the innings. The scoring rate might not have been pretty but 22 overs later they still hadn't been seperated after reaching a century partnership. Sadly, both players fell just short of their half-centuries as Morrison was caught out on 47, and Laitt bowled two overs later three runs short of his target of only his second ever fifty. Some lusty late-order hitting from Nihul Jayasuirya and skipper Allan Conybeare upped the score to competitive 184.
In reply, the Hawks started off well with early wickets for Ramali and Jayasuriya who first five over spell went for just two runs - one of which was a wide! The Lexden innings was underpinned by a superb century by wicket-keeper Matt Howlett which contained sixteen 4's and one six. On a tricky wicket which was another lively Horkesley wicket, Howlett appeared to be the only batsmen on either side who really looked as though he was 'in' during his time at the crease. Unfortunately for Lexden, Howlett couldn't find someone to give him the support he required as Horkesley picked up wickets on a regular basis. Graeson Laitt continued his good day by picking up a wicket with his first ball (a landmark 450th wicket since GHCC records began) and another later in the same over as skipper Allan Conybeare gave nine player a chance with the ball. It was Chamoth Jayasuriya who picked up the vital wicket of Howlett thanks to a juggled catch by Paul Hart and between him, Hart, and Conybeare they left Lexden requiring 15 off the last over with Hart recording excellent figures of 7-4-8-1. The coup de grace was applied by Ramali who took his third wicket of the game with the fourth ball of the final over.
A good game of cricket between two sides who were both determined to enjoy the day and not let anything put them off! We look forward to arranging fixtures against them next year and hope that the standard of match can be continued in to 2008!
The Hawks are at home to Boxted on Saturday afternoon in a make-or-break game that could see their season over - or could revive their fading promotion challenge.
