Great Horkesley Cricket Club First Team v Marks Tey on Sun 25 Apr 2004 at 1pm
Great Horkesley Cricket Club Won 8 Wickets

Match report Great Horkesley won their first game of the season with a comprehensive victory of Marks Tey at The Chantry. Home captain Graeson Laitt (unusually) won the toss and elected to bowl on a typical Horkesley wicket that looked as though it might offer a bit of movement in the early overs.
Webber and Glasgow provided a stern test in the opening overs with Paul hart struggling to find any consistency through lack of bowling in the Nets - this will no doubt come back the more he bowls. However, skipper Laitt made an inspired bowling change by bringing on Zimbabwean Allan Conybeare from the Road End. He made the early inroads - though a dodgy LBW decision to get rid of the obstinate Webber helped.
Glasgow went thanks to stunning catch from Sarat at mid-wicket before Conybeare drew applause from all sides thanks to a diving stop at deep square leg after a forty yard chase along the boundary's edge. He had three chances to take catches on the boundary all off the bowling of Jetty Sarat. Firstly he caught a high catch only to tread on the boundary rope before just failing to jump high enough to catch the middle effort. Finally, he got both hands to the easier of the three only to let the ball slip out of hiis grasp to his own annoyance.
He quickly made amends though. Smith and Rich went in consecutive deliveries - the latter caught and bowled, before Sarat decived the hard-hitting Stanley. Two more balls and two more wickets saw the end of the Branston brothers as Marks Tey got themselves in a pickle and looking to be out for under a ton. However, solid batting from skipper Chris Glasgow and Allister saw Mark's Tey get to 135 all out with Conybeare taking 6-23.
In reply, Horkesley stormed to victory thanks to Jetty Sarat. He produced some wonderful drives and blundgening pulls to take apart the Tey side. An out of touch David Walker, struggling to come to terms with the slow pace of the wicket in comparison to the nets, was bowled for 18, and with his century beckoning, a rash shot from Sarat saw him caught out at slip for 91.
It was left to vice-captain Steve Riddlestion, and that man Conybeare to take Great Horkesley past the victory total to record a win by 8 wickets. They'll be tougher games than this ahead, but given that this was not the strongest eleven the club could have put it, it was a pleasing start to the season. Captain Graeson Laitt said after the game that "Allan had bowled well in the nets and deserved a chance. It was a risk but sometimes these things just work out". Of the LBW decision that started the fall of wickets he said that "it's rare to get decisions in this Division. For every bad one given, we have eight or nine very good ones turned down. After the disappointments of last season, it was nice to get a bit of good luck for a change!".
