Coggeshall v Great Horkesley Cricket Club First Team on Sun 02 May 2004 at 2pm
Great Horkesley Cricket Club Lost by 5 Wickets
Match report
After the previous weekend win over Marks Tey, GHCC knew that their second game of the season against Coggeshall Town would be a much tougher affair. Sporting three debutants in Niall Fitzgerald, Nihul Jayasuriya and James Wallis, it became clear that it would be near impossible when the teams were announced with Ollie Blackwell in the Town side. Blackwell, part of a clan of Blackwells playing for Coggeshall, is a prolific batsmen in the First team at Harefield Lane who play in Division One of the Two Counties League. It is some difference between that, and PDQ Division 5!
On a wicket that was damp and suffereing from having been played on the previous day, skipper Graeson Laitt again won the toss and decided to bat first - with the weather forecasts suggesting rain later in the day he wanted to get some runs on the board before the ground was unplayable. Certainly, some areas of the outfield, particularly near the excellent pavillion, would not have taken much more water.
Some tight early bowling caused a few flutters for the Hawks, with Sarat fortunate to see a relatively easy chance go down, but just as it looked as though he had survived the new ball, an inuspicious shot saw him caught at mid-off by one of the few colts in the side. Riddleton might consider himself unlucky to have been bowled out by the 7th ball of the over - bowler Rees delivering the sixth ball from behind the umpire's shoulder and was rightfully no-balled.
Wallis looked good in a rare cameo before falling to the same lofted off drive, before Srikanth steadied the ship along with vice-captain David Walker. When Srikanth was bowled, Jayasuriya lasted two balls before thumping a full toss straight into mid-off's hands Horkesley looked unlikely to posting a score much over 60 - some way short of the 150 the skipper had thought would be defendable.
However, some lusty blows by Fitzgerald and McLean, with adequate support from Laitt Jnr got the total up towards the century mark despite having real problems with Essex U13 bowler Jagger...who's loop and prodigious turn on the sticky wicket caused many a missed attacking shot. Eventually though, Laitt Jnr was unluckily bowled off his pads to a ball outside of leg stump before Pembroke was beaten for pace leaving Paul Hart high and dry at the bowler's end.
In reply, Horkesley got off to a tremendous start with Niall Fitzgerald getting Robinson plumb LBW with just the third ball of the innings. However, O Blackwell and D Cummings managed, with some good batting and a little bit of luck to steer Coggershall towards the fifty mark. With Paul Hart still yet to rediscover his line and length - mixing great deliveries with wides - skipper Lait took the tough decision to take him off and replace him with himself purely and simply because of the lack of runs.
After two boundaries in his first two overs it was beginning to look a mistake but he gradually pulled it back and started to cause both batsmen problems with his flight and turn - the skipper bowling his offbreaks instead of his usual seam up variety. In his fourth over, he got the break through, trapping Cummings LBW while in his next spell, dismissing opposition skipper Matt Blackwell for a duck with a delivery that hit the batsman, and then rolled gently back onto the stumps and just dislodgiing a ball.
The collapse continued as Townrow lasted just a couple of balls. He had already survived a close LBW decision from Laitt before Fitzgerald's pace was too much for him and the umpire raised the deadly finger. It was the third LBW decision the Horkesley side had received that match. With one last week, in just two games they had already doubled the number of LBW's they had from last season's campaign.
When Ollie Blackwell turned back for a third run on Fitzgerald's slip in the outfield, he was caught short of his ground as an excellent throw came in to wicketkeeper McLean. However, the chink of light that had opened up towards an improbable victory was diminished by Rees and Petereson who put Sarat to the sword.
It would certainly have been interesting to how the result had differed if a) Horkesley had managed to get themselves to a total of 150+ and b) had Blackwell, playing well out of his class had not steadied the ship with a innings of the game. Coggeshall surely did not have much batting left, with two youngsters left from the four batsmen who didn't get a knock, but the game was taken away from us by the tall opening bat who produced some outstanding shots not usually associated with Division 5
