Ardleigh v Great Horkesley Cricket Club First Team on Sun 16 May 2004 at 2pm
Great Horkesley Cricket Club Won Won by 70 Runs

Match report Gt Horkesley picked up their second win of season against Ardleigh 2nds on Sunday - but it could have be oh so different had the home side taken their early chances. Ardleigh spilled five relatively easy chances in the first ten overs and were made to pay the penalty as the Horkesley openers went on to score a half-century apirece.
On a glorious Sunday afternoon and a flat track, though a rather awkward looking outfield, skipper Graeson Laitt won the toss for the third time this season and had no option in asking his opposite number to bowl first. With David Walker away watching Sudbury in the FA Vase, Sarat was partnered by Nihul Jayasuriya to face the new ball. Both batted erratically to start with - great shots mixed in with mis-timed strokes that always gave the home side a sniff of a wicket. However, it wasn't to be as both players notched 50's - Sarat his second of the season, and a first for the club for Jayasuriya.
After getting the Hawks past the one hundred run mark, Sarat was first out - fooled by a quicker delivery from Neil Thomas. This started a mini-collapse. Jayasuriya slipped and was unable to turn back and make his ground, while Riddleston picked out a fielder who suprisingly held the catch. Wallis was bowled through the gate before Srikanth started to steady the ship along with Daren Asher - making his first start to the campaign.
With the overs ticking by, Horkesley had wickets in hand and could start to run aggresively, though hesitation in the middle caused Asher to shorten his stay at the crease. Hard-hitting Fitzgerald struck some powerful blows and when he was bowled, McLean continued in the same style, scoring sixteen off just seven deliveries. Srikanth finished on forty-five not-out timing the ball excellently as Horkesley finished jsut shy of the captain's estimated required total with 223 after 45 overs.
Fitzgerald and Hart took the new ball for Horkesley with the former bowling with hostile pace, including a frightening beamer which slipped out of his hand during delivery. It wasn't long before he made the breakthrough with Lucas the first to be bowled, before a couple more quick wickets put Ardleigh in trouble at 28-3. With Hart starting to find a bit of form coming up the hill, he was unlucky not to pick up a wicket but the umpire decided the ball was a no-ball for being over the batsmen's waist - probably the correct decision though the club secretary was obviously disappointed.
With Ardleigh getting behind the run rate, Fitzgerald, who had bowled four maidens in his six overs was replaced by Steve Riddlestion who picked up a couple of quick wickets in a four over spell. With the batsmen having trouble with the glaring sunlight, his loop was causing problems. With five wickets down, Sarat, who had replaced Hart, picked up the vital wicket of opposition skipper Sage who had got to his half-century a couple of balls earlier.
With six wickets down, Laitt decided he could relax and allow those who might not get many other chances an opportunity to turn their arms over. Wallis and Pembroke each had three overs, while Srikanth, bowling for the first time in a league game, got a wicket thanks to a good catch by Paul Hart at cover. Ardleigh probably got about forty runs more than they might normally have got but the game of cricket was the winner - though it did draw out the match by a couple of hours. The Hawks bowled out their opponents with Graeson Laitt getting the better of Neil Thomas - colleagues on the League committee - before Sarat wrapped up proceedings with his second wicket thanks to Asher's catch at point.
