Great Horkesley Cricket Club First Team v Kelvedon & Feering on Sun 08 Aug 2004 at 2pm
Great Horkesley Cricket Club Won By 6 Wickets
Match report
Great Horkesley were made to work much harder than they had the previous day against a resilient Kelvedon & Feering 3rd XI who belied the average age of the squad. Including quite a few colts, they handled the pace of Fitzgerald admirably and got to a total of 202 that could have been challenging some years ago for the club. Again, thanks to the top three batsmen, who contributed nearly 150 runs to the total, another succesful result was achieved.
Once again, on a boiling hot day, skipper Graeson Laitt contrived to lose an important toss of the coin - his second of the weekend. Invited to field, the Hawks found themselves struggling to make the breakthrough with neither Fitzgerald nor Richard Walker able to find the edge of the bat. M Johnson and C Bennett were clearly enjoying the challenge but eventually, McLean snaffled up an edge from Fitzgerald and skipper Laitt played his trump card by bring on Chapman at the Road End of the ground. It paid immediate dividends as "Chappy" took four quick wickets including that off Bonvini and captain Cocks. When skipper Laitt got Chris Hards launching the ball towards deep mid-wicket breathes were held as David Walker had spilled an earlier similar chance. This time, there was no mistake and Walker's relief was there for all to see.
There then followed a session of resillient batting from Kelvedon between Leftwich and S Warner. It was clear that the heat, and tiredness of the two weekends exertions had left everyone feeling tired and it took a big effort to try to raise the side. The spin of Sarat everntually broke the partnership as Leftwich came down the track looking to score big runs in the final overs. Anirudh Thotapalli took his second catch of the day to dismiss Warner, but even a late three over blast from Fitzgerald failed to bowl the visitors out.
With a challenging total against them it was vital that The Chantrymen got off to a good start and yet again Sheen and Sarat did just that. Sarat was just four away from yet another half-century when he mis-timed a pull shot and was caught by Leftwich, with only ten overs on the board. At that point, Ed Long-Price joined fellow "Border Guard" team-mate Sheen out at the crease and together they exploited the gaps in the field. Sheen got to his half-century before eventually falling to Chris Hards while the same bowler also dismissed ELP, this time just five runs away - maybe the pressure of his watching family got to him!
Eventually though David Walker's temperament and Anirudh's flick off his legs got The Hawks home to complete a succesful double weekend, keeping up the pressure on both Mistley and Coggeshall - both of whom face Gt Horkesley in the next couple of weeks. Keveldon and Feering's youngsters were a credit to their club and their captain N Cocks. It was a good game of cricket played in the right atmosphere with little dissent from either side - the spirit of the game was there for all to see.
