Mistley v Great Horkesley Cricket Club First Team on Sun 15 Aug 2004 at 2pm
Great Horkesley Cricket Club Lost By 43 Runs
Match report
The Hawks suffered their first defeat in eight games at Mistley on Sunday afternoon with the home side's class showing in the end. Despite decent knocks from Jetty Sarat and Allan Conybeare, the total of 253 proved to be beyond particularly as the light started to diminish.
Great Horkesley skipper Graeson Laitt was pleased to be able to send out one of his strongest possible sides for a game that he knew would be vital if they wanted to finish in the top two of the Division. He certainly had plenty of bowling options while batting wise the tail was again very short with just Paul Hart the only man not to have recorded a half-century or better for the club. Right from the off it was going to be a tough day as following another lost toss, the Chantrymen were inserted on a wicket that look flat but had suffered from the weeks rain. Niall Fitzgerald bowled a hostile spell but given a left-hand/right-hand combination struggled to find a consistent line. Paul Hart tried manfully at the other end, beating the bat on a couple of occasion and having a catch dropped to once again find himself without any luck.
In an effort to find a breakthrough, Hart was replaced by Richard Walker but the younger brother was soon limping off - hit on the shin at a fare rate of knots by a Griggs off-drive. That prompted the return of Hart to finish the over off with, and the introduction of Laitt, while Chapman came on for Fitzgerald. Three balls into his spell, the breakthrough came thanks to the off-breaks of Laitt. Griggs tried to play a ridiculous reverse sweep to his first ball from the Horkesley skipper but forget to allow for the spin. It moved just enough to hit the opener on the pad to out plumb LBW. One became three soon after as the slower bowlers took control. Laitt clean bowled both Steel and Dove - though the latters kept a little low - before Watson flicked one off Chapman into the safe hands of Ed Long-Price. When last week's centurion, Gibson, was LBW trying to pull Chapman, the Hawks side were right back into the game, but there was to be an Australian sting in the tail.
Mistley had included both of the club contracted players S Brand and Fabian Tabain at numbers seven and eight and despite Brand's run out, the thirty-one runs scored by Tabain looked as though it had probably pushed the total twenty-five runs to far. Tabain was out to an excellent father/son combination. Sarat bowled and Prince, fielding as a substitute for Richard Walker, held a high catch at gully. Home skipper Martin Barlow scored a handy 29, with one big six off Fitzgerald as the big man struggled with his footing, but when he was bowled out on the last ball of the 44th over, the thought was that The Chantrymen were still in the game and that spare over could be crucial.
It needed a good start and a big innings from at least one of the top four. Unfortunately, it didn't quite come off with Mistley taking every chance that came their way. Ed Sheen struggled to time the ball before belting one to cover to be out - though he should have been run out four overs earlier - while E Long-Price got done in the same was as Gibson before him when trying to pull the ball to square leg but getting there about two and a half hours too early.
However, Jetty Sarat scored another good half-century to keep his prolific season going. If there is to be one complaint on Sarat's season is that he hasn't converted enough 50's into centuries and again that was the case as he holed out at long-on. Allan Conybeare also continued on his merry way, eventually top scoring with 62 and being the last man out.
Srikanth hit one glorious shot through the extra-cover boundary before he too was caught while Kevin Chapman was out bowled dragging the ball onto his stumps. With Walker unlikely to bat unless absolutely necessary, that meant a big knock from Fitzgerald and McLean was required. The big Durham lad thrashed three 6's on the way to his 26 but tried to play a more cute shot and was bowled.
Sid wasn't convinced by Ed Sheen's decision to give him out LBW but the part-time opener can only give what he sees while skipper Laitt was comfortable enough until one which seemed to keep low on him - though the rest of the team all agreed he just missed the damn thing! The innings was over in the gathering gloom when Conybeare's drive was smartly held by Griggs in his follow through.
All in all the Hawks have nothing to be ashamed off in this defeat. Mistley were always going to be the best side in the Division but I felt we had given them more of a game than they were used to in this Division. Mistley had six first team players in the side, which just goes to prove that Horkesley are better than a Division Five side (Did anyone else think it ironic after the game that we participated in a draw to assist in the funding of the Australian players?). How disappointing therefore, that this defeat probably means that they will remain in the Division for another season.
