Great Horkesley Cricket Club First Team v Coggeshall on Sun 22 Aug 2004 at 1pm
Great Horkesley Cricket Club Won by 3 Wickets
Match report
Great Horkesley continued to apply the pressure on the leaders with a win over second place Coggeshall Town on Sunday afternoon. After restricting the visitor's to 153, the home side reached their target with three wickets left, and plenty of overs still to go. It keeps The Chantrymen in third place and lying in wait for any mistakes that the top two sides might just make.
Following the heavy rain over the weekend it was a miracle that his game ever took place. Stevie Riddleston and Kevin Chapman must be congratulated for turning out a wicket that saw over three hundreds scored on it when other local sides were unable to play.
Given the preceding weather conditions it was an important toss to win, and when Matt Blackwell called incorrectly, Hawks skipper Graeson Laitt invited his side to bat first. To start with it looked like it might be a wrong decision as MR Blackwell and Dingley comfortably saw off the opening bowlers - though Hart was unlucky not to pick up something from as good a ten over spell as he has bowled all season.
However, the masterstroke came when Horkesley skipper Laitt brought himself on to bowl, and almost immediately the run-rate was cut dramatically as Laitt's first seven overs went for just two runs, while picking up a couple of wickets as well. His off-breaks were turning a mile and it was enough to worry Dingle, who after seeing the first delivery he faced spin at a right-angle decided to come down the wicket.....but missed. Veteran Sid McLean was there to take the ball, the bails were off and the Chantrymen never looked back.
At the other end, Laitt received tremendous support from the miserly Chapman. Between the two bowlers, they bowled twenty overs for just twenty seven runs wih four wickets (20-11-27-4). Without doubt, it was this spell that won the game though conditions were ideal for both bowlers. As Coggeshall buckled under the pressure, tempers began to get a little heated but it was just good old competitive cricket!
Eventually, thanks to some solid hitting from Blackwell's Matt and Will, Coggeshall got up to a final total of 153-6, a total which Horkesley skipper Laitt felt his side should get depending on how well they adapted to the slow wicket. Sarat didn't. His first ball faced went for four - the second to the hands of the mid-on fielder. When Asher repeated the same trick, the odds on a Horkesley success took a slight nose-dive.
The Chantrymen had a few aces up their sleeve - none more so than Allan Conybeare. The Zimbabwean has impressed all with his solid batting at number four this season and once again he stood up to the onslaught. He had a slice of luck when being dropped early one while a delivery from Rees just hit the pad outside the line of the off-stump.
Conybeare had good support from James Wallis with a hard-hitting 19 (obviously benefitting from doing the washing up after his marvellous teas!) before Niall Fitzgerald unleashed a viscious assualt on the Coggeshall Town bowling - cracking three sixes in his knock of 36 and losing a couple of balls in the process.
When Fitzgerald was caught out, there were a couple of late scares as MR Blackwell took the wickets of McLean and Chapman as well. However, skipper Laitt's marvellous flick off his legs for two gave the home side a well deserved victory.
