Great Horkesley Cricket Club Second Eleven v The New Inn on Sun 23 May 2004 at 2.00pm
Great Horkesley Cricket Club Won By 1 Wicket
Match report
On a Sunday afternoon with a cold chill in the air, Horkesley's friendly against the New Inn ended in success for the home side by one wicket. The Horkesley side were missing regulars G Laitt, N Jayasuriya, and Stevie Riddleston while giving first outings of the season to veteran Chairman Dave Laitt, youngster Rishi Sharat and Richard Walker returning from injury.
Skipper for the day David Walker carried on Laitt's fine record with the coin this season by winning the toss and inserting the opposition into bat. Fitzgerald soon got amongst the wicket with success in first two overs, including the dismissal of the dangerous Brian Greenhoff. Sensing that the game may be over too quickly, the captain gave his strike bowler one more over, which saw Bloomfield score the only runs Fitzgeraldn conceded with a well timed square cut.
From then, all the Horkesley players got a chance to turn their arm over, with Pembroke taking two wickets with his slow "will it ever arrive" leftarmers. After being carted around the ground by Bloomfield (who scored a well-deserved 80-odd) and N Thompson, who reached his half-century too, Sarat got back to wicket taking ways with three for 29 as the visitors closed on 201 for 10 - both sides batting twelve players.
In reply, Horkesley suffered a shock as David Walker was adjudged plumb leg before by umpire Anthony Pembroke however Conybeare and D Laitt put together a solid stand of fifty before the former lost concentration and holed out a simple catch. A poor finish to the innings which had seen some wonderful drives into the Chantry's hedgerow.
There then followed a long partnership between Laitt and Sharath Jnr before the youngster was run out as the rate steadily got higher, however Fitzgerald was soon to put paid to that as he launched into the New Inn bowlers with a ferocity not seen at The Chantry for many a while. His fifty came in just seventeen balls, quite a few less than it had taken the Chairman to reach his. Fitzgerald scored six 6's in his innings which had the crowd scurrying for the safety of the pavillion, and saw one of them go straight through the driver's side window of his father-in-laws car.
His innings gave the side the lift towards the total it needed and all the following batsmen manged to make small indentations towards the total required until Srikanth's pull to deep backward square took the Hawks to another win.
