First Team
Captain :
Allan Conybeare
A Michael Vaughan lookalike - he even seems to get the same injuries - he is a talented stroke maker who will be looking to get amongst the runs again during 2009. Currently 3rd in the all-time averages, he smacked a career high 122 against The Real Oddies in a crucial relegation battle last season. Also turns his arm with his left arm deliveries and has picked up a reputation as a partnership breaker.
Vice Captain :
Mohammed Ramali
Sri Lankan Doctor who marked his Horkesley debut by pulling a hamstring within the first few overs of the game at West Bergholt. One of the club's two Vice-captains, he is the club's away swing bowler and middle order bat.
Players
Masum Ahmed
Another new player for the 2010 campaign, making his debut against West Bergholt. While that was a quiet debut, he took 3-39 in his first bowl for the club against High Easter. A spinner, he'll provide a different option for the Hawks this season.
Mahesh Arcot
Leg spinner who has found time limited recently following his first child. Another of the club's medical team his performance against Wormingford at The Chantry last season (6-25) was one of the best ever from a Horkesley player.
Daren Asher
Hard working batsman who favours the leg-side just a bit more than the offside. Work commitments mean that Daren's appearances have been stricktly limited over the past few seasons but always a solid performer when he does find the time.
Adam Cornell
Rob Ely
Niall Fitzgerald
Perhaps the club's quickest bowler, he is a fearful sight for any batsmen who faces. Tall, strong he has the ability to get the ball to lift alarmingly. Add in the fact that he is a more than useful middle-to-lower order batsman and its clear that he is a major component in the Hawks squad.
Himal Gurung
Carried his bat on debut against West Mersea 2nds on 25th April scoring a third of the runs required to win the match batting second. Also took two catches in the games. Looks as though he enjoys the openers role and will give Hawks much needed competition at the top of the order. A quick fielder with a good throw.
Paul Hart
This Opening Bowler will have to show form early on to justify continued occupation of the position; with younger members bowling impressively in the nets he can't rely too heavily on his leading wicket-taker status for the previous 2008 season. This individual continues to have greater aspirations in respect of batting but an inaugural '6' in a match towards the end of last year won't in itself serve to advance him up the batting order! Also Vice-captain of the team and is ready to take over if Allan or Ramali are unavailable
Peter Hewitt
Returned to the club after a few years away. One of the club's most versatile players in that he can bat anywhere. Will probably be used as the club's 'finisher' this campaign. Will compete to wear the gloves with Tom Judd during the season, but is also an excellent first slip just in case.
Simon Howes
Joined the club last season, and made a good impression with a match-winning innings against Chappel & Wakes Colne. Bowled medium pace last year, but has found an extra yard in the nets as evidenced by the ball which struck the face grill of the captain! University commitments may mean that we can call on Simon sparingly.
Tom Howes
New signing for the club from Colchester & East Essex which will cushion the blow of losing a player to them. Tom has bowled quickly in the nets and looks a technically correct batsmen as well. However, he'll be looking to make an impression when the seasons starts in April. I understand he can also keep wicket and may get asked to do that job depending on the teams needs.
Phil Jarvis
Chamath Jayasooriya
Young left arm bowler who will be looking to make an impact in the side this season following the departure of Prince to Berkshire. Has the ability to swing the ball and has a nagging length which confuses batsmen. Unfortunately, it appears that the regions biggest club have decided that he cannot play for GHCC this season.
Nihal Jayasooriya
Nihul will yet again be disappointed that he hasn't turned all his good starts in to big starts. However, the more he gets used to the wickets at Horkesley the more likely he will start converting. Has to take on added responsiblity with Sarat's departure. A good fielder with a safe pair of hands, he can also bowl wicket-to-wicket medium pacers.
Sarat Jetty thukaram b
After four seasons with the club, Sarat has unfortunately moved away to pastures new (boo!). The good news is though that he'll still be making occasional visits to The Chantry to play (hooray). A devastating opening batsman, and fine wicket-keeper, he will be disappointed that his bowling has not been up to the same high standards. Rarely dropped a catch in the outfield either.
Tom Judd
Signed for the club last season, and caught the eye with some confident performances behind the stumps. He'll be looking to improve on a best score of 26 but from the middle order, its hoped he'll provide extra impetus to the innings.
Abdullah Kulkarni
Made his debut as an opener in the win over West Bergholt on 16th May in 2010. On a tricky wicket he looked as though he knows how to hold a bat, and hopefully through the season he'll fulfill the promise with a stackful of runs
David Laitt
One of the veteran's of the side, Dave Laitt has returned to become Chairman of the club for 2004. A former professional football, Dave is the father of skipper Graeson, though that doesn't stop the occasional scowl when he drops another catch from his favourite son.
Has been known to open the batting on occasions with his "swing-from-the-hip" style, and can be relied upon to bowl an occasional over - occasional being the key word.
Graeson Laitt
Suave, sophisticated, privately educated single gentleman - oops, sorry, that's the other website! After six years as captain of Gt Horkesley, Graeson has gone back to be just one of the boys again, but can be relied on to impart his words of wisdom as and when necessary. His pace has dropped - though he can still open the bowling if required- he relies more on his experience than speed plus the ability to move the bowl prodigiously of the seam. Can't bat for toffee though with 2006 the first season for a long time that he failed to get into double figures.
Dennis Leeks
Edward Long-Price
The Hawk's jewel in the crown this refined former tax dodger has had his best season for the side culminating in him being the best English batsmen in the PDQ League with an average of 98.5 for 2006. His 162* against Maldon at Drapers Farm was the second highest innings and is currently 2nd in the all-time top batters for the club. Excellent fielder, occasional spin bowler, and sometimes takes his place behind the stumps as well.
Adam Lowing
Adam is a former member of the club who got in touch last season looking to play a couple of games during the season. For various reasons, he was unable to get in a game, but I'm hopefully we might see Adam back at The Chantry during 2009
Anup Mathew
Anup joined the club in 2009 and has been unlucky in that his turn to bowl always seem to coincide with playing a very good batting outfit! The Hawks haven't quite worked out his best batting position yet, but 17 off ten balls at High Easter suggests that he can find the boundary when needed.
Vish Mula
Just as Vish was starting to get to grips with his batting, he moved to Chelmsford to take up a new post at the hospital. Keen as mustard, hopefully Vish will be able to play or two games for the club this season.
Arunajith Peiris
Another member of our Sri Lankan contingent, Aru is the quiet man of the Hawk's team. A tall bowler who bowls a heavy ball, he is also good in the field. Can give the ball a fearful whack which has mid-on and mid-off running for cover.
Anthony Pembroke
Anthony's batting prowess is legendary. Once he gets going, there is no stopping him. Unfortunately, that tends to be after about twenty overs by which time his middle stump has usually gone cartwheeling over the wicketkeeper.
Steve Riddleston
The longest serving player at the club having joined in 1988 Steve is a player who needs his confidence massaged on a regular basis. When he's good as a bowler, he is almost unplayable with great variations on line and length. Technically, the best looking batsmen at the club but sadly that tends to be back in the Pavillion as he forgets to put bat to ball! Also now a proud Dad of Twin Girls Caitlin and Shara! This makes his availability very limited. what will the team do without those duck contributions?? A good fielder, we hope he'll back to don the whites on a few occasions this season.
Kevin Saunders
A legend in his own teatime. Kevin likes to regal the club of stories of yore about Villa, Cricket, and buses. Sadly, coming from Birmingham, no one can actually understand a word that comes out of his mouth, and thus rely on the the translation services offered by his youngest daughter aged just a few months, who makes just about as much sense. A good fielder who gets in the way of the ball, he can be guaranteed to seek out the use of the first aid kit at least once a game.
Shafi Sayed
Joined the club last season, and is a welcome addition to the fast bowling department. A whippy action sees the ball come at you quicker than expected, he is also a very good fielder as well as being handy with the bat. Will prove to be a very useful middle order batsman but needs to remember that he can't appeal every ball!
Rishi Sharath
Moved to Berkshire at the end of last season, Prince has nearly all the attributes needed to make a decent cricketer. Good hands, a develish leg-spinner, he also scores runs for fun in his age-groups. Has handled playing adult cricket just as easily though occasionaly lets his mind wander away to other things!
Ed Sheen
A hard-hitting opening batsman who loves to get involved in the fielding as well.
Suresh Sukrit
A new signing for the 2010 season from Colchester & East Essex, Suresh is a technically correct batsman who relies on his timing rather than power. His bucket-hand will result in many catches for his new team, and a beautiful bowling action will see him take wickets throughout the campaign.
Stuart Taylor
Will Thomas
An occasional guest player for the club, Will has proved to be top class on all his appearances for the Hawks. A talented batsman, he also keeps wicket when requried.
Simon Underwood
Former Army man who lends an air of calmness to proceedings with his quiet authoritative manor. Started to prove his worth with the bat last season after we finally managed to persude him to bat higher up the order.
David Walker
Ashes follower David is also the club's grounsdman and a lot of thanks go to him for his hardwork over the past year or so. Sadly, family illness has left his participation in games to a low number but hopefully we'll see the former opener back to his best in 2007
James Wallis
One of the few Horkesley villagers in the side, James has always impressed with either his keeping wicket or his no nonsense batting.
